SPARKS, NV - Thirty JO fastpitch teams converged on the Shadow Mountain and Don Mello Sports Complexes May 21st and May 22nd to compete for the ASA Pacific Challenge Series Qualifier titles in 10U, 12U and 14U divisions.
The 14U division had eleven teams bracketed and saw action that produced four teams that could have taken top honors with the right combination of breaks. The CA Breeze from Sacramento, CA outlasted the rest of the field and in the championship game defeated the Nevada Lightning-Wunder 6-4. CA Breeze finished the tournament with a record of 5-1 and with their win earned free entry into the rest of the season’s Region 14 tournament schedule. Runner-up Nevada Lightning-Wunder finished with a 4-2 tourney mark and along with CA Breeze earned berths into the ASA PCS finals in mid-October in Stockton, CA.
Third place, with a record of 4-1, went to Grants Pass Fastpitch out of Grants Pass, Oregon and the fourth place finisher was Nevada Lightning-Weaver who finished with a record of 3-2.
The 12U division had eleven teams go up against each other and this bracket, like the 14U, could have seen any of three teams win out. When the dust settled Nevada Lightning 1992 pounded out a 17-1 thrashing of Roseville Heat to take first place. Both the Lightning and Heat finished with a tournament mark of 5-1and with the top finishes earned berths in the ASA PCS Championships in October.
The 10U division had two teams stand above the rest. CA Breeze out of Sacramento and the Madera Lady Canes from Madera, CA both reached the championship finale undefeated with 5-0 records. CA Breeze jumped on the Lady Canes early and often in the title tilt as the Breeze hammered out a 15-2 victory. The victory by the Breeze and the runner-up finish by the Lady Canes earned both teams berths in the ASA PCS Championships later this season.
