PHOENIX, AZ-The NSA Gold Glove Spectacular at the Victory Lane Sports Complex continues to be a February staple.
The annual tournament continues to boom in popularity with 137 teams in Men’s, Senior’s, Coed and Women’s divisions at the Victory Lane Sports Complex. "We had 53 Senior teams, 48 Men’s teams, 22 Coed and 14 Women’s, with teams from several states, many coming to our nice climate for their first tournament of the year," said Arizona NSA State Director Rick Seifman. "Teams love the weather, and the Victory Lane facility."
UUUYYY (Phoenix, AZ) had a strong start to the new year as they topped the 21 team Men’s DI field. UUUYYY had a 4-0 clean slate and beat Doggenno for the title. The Gold Glove DI all tournament team selections were Albert Flores, Offensive MVP, Steve Perez, Brett McPherson and Junior Rodriquez from UUUYYY, Raul Juaciax, defensive MVP, Jake Hamweit, John Lopez and Gabe Monteriuz from Doggenno, along with Kenny Ailport and Bruno Cafarelli from the third place Gueress.
The Luke AFB Falcons flew high to top a 21 team Men’s II bracket winning all four outings. The runner-up, Hitters Row (Glendale, AZ), fought back from the ´ bracket to finish 7-1. They finally ran out of gas losing to Luke Buzz-Saw 21-3 in the championship. The DII all tournament team was led by Offensive MVP Tony Immeckus, along with Tom Flowers, Rolaro Mills and Dan Yeck from Luke. From Hitters Row, Drew Whetter was the Defensive MVP along with Troy Thesill, Craig Kreipet and Johnny Mesquvita. "The Gold Glove is always a big tournament to play, it’s one we want to win," said Hitters Row pitcher/coach Issac Ruiz. "The Gold Glove also gives double points and it gave us the state lead in points with our second place finish."
The Az Bushwhackers took the Men’s E honors with Tony Norris, Offensive MVP.
In Women’s Gold Glove action, Bad Habit took bragging rights with Remix the runner-up and Az Pro taking third place. All three teams were from Phoenix, Az, which fostered excitement and added to the competition. Named to the all tournament team was Offensive MVP Andrea Garcia, Christina Sordia, Bree Ott and Yvonne Quintero from Bad Habit, Sandra Turley, Allison Hansen and Shane Ewing from Remix and Lisa Olivineia, Toni Lenhouser and Danielle Hanauer from Az Pro.
Az Pro Depriuer (Phoenix, AZ), won the Women’s Red bracket led by Offensive MVP, Marcy Erickson, Natalie Taylor, Ghong Bonez and True Korrin. The Amigo’s (Phoenix, AZ) were the runner-up.
In Coed divisions, the Perfect Strangers (Glendale, AZ), the defending ASA Western C World champions, took the C division with a 20-13 victory over Chix N Mix (Mesa, AZ) in the final. Mizuno Crew took the B championship. Frizun went 4-0 in the Blue/Green division with a 17-7 rout of the runner-up Sandlot in the title clash. Virus finished third. Named to the all tournament team were Offensive MVP, Don Pruitt, Jodi Pruitt, Gina Normandin and Tiffany Ruffington from the championship team, Steven Hourhra, Chad Wanuer and Robert Jackson from Sandlot along with Rashella Sherror from the Yard Dogs.
Lost Cause edged the Az Outlaws 9-8 for the Red/White division crown. Premier Floors (Tucson,AZ) finished third. Named to the all tourney team was Offensive MVP Scott Manning, Preston Riucnai and Jinny Fitzgerald from Lost Cause, and Robert Tolliver, Penny Hinerand Jeremy Winn from the Outlaws. "We had moved up a division and were humbled to be in the higher division. We had fun and played well," said Az Outlaw’s Tolliver.
