RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - A&V tournaments held it’s third of four in a series of tournaments at the A&V/Worth Bash 4 Cash Finals Tournaments on July 23 at Quakes Stadium in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
The day started out with 14 men’s ‘E-Novice’ teams who had won a berth in a qualifier or were given an at-large berth on points earned in previous tournaments played.
This division could have had nineteen teams bracketed as a hand full of teams were unable to play in the finals because of their rosters not being right.
A&V owner Al Acosta said, "Each team knew that it could change up to 3 players but must play at an A&V tournament prior to this major tournament in order to have these players added on their qualifying roster. It would have been nice to have the 19 teams to play, but the 14 teams that played were still given the opportunity to battle it out for the exact same prizes as if their were 19 teams playing." Acosta went on to say, "Just because you don’t have all the teams to play in the finals after you have given out all these berths and some teams don’t comply with all the rules, you don’t punish the teams that did comply with the rules. All prizes will remain the same."
This A&V/Worth Bash 4 Cash Final had a different finish than expected. Co-champions were given to Heavy Hitters from Whittier, CA with a perfect 4-0 record and Bad Seed from San Diego, CA with a record of 6-1. The reason they each were "given" the title is because both coach’s had agreed to not play the championship game and split the $2,500.00 that was being awarded to the two top finishers.
"It was nice to see that players and coach’s can agree on working out things together in a big tournament like this." Acosta also said, "I see both Heavy Hitters and Bad Seed as Champions! It would have been nice to see the championship games played, but if a champion can be decided this way, it says a lot about these teams."
Heavy Hitters started out the day with a win over Team Loaded, they then won their second game 14-10 beating Spank Daddies. Their 3rd game saw them beat a good Royal Flush team 17-7. The game was a lot closer than the score shows. It was 7-6 going into the top of the 6th inning. But a couple costly Royal Flush errors resulted in a big inning for Heavy Hitters and the big win.
In a battle of unbeatens, both Heavy Hitters and Miken Greysox (also 3-0) were unable to put together any offensive momentum. The score was 3-2 Miken Greysox in the 5th inning when each team started to have defensive lapses that resulted in both teams capitalizing on each other’s mistakes.
The game ended with Heavy Hitters on top taking a 12-8 victory.
Bad Seed lost its first game 7-6 to Crunch Time then went through the loser’s bracket with six straight wins. Now ready to face Heavy Hitters in the first championship game, both teams’ coaches and players got together and came up with the idea to end the tournament with co-winner’s.
