RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - A&V Softball Tournaments brought together eighteen teams that were either invited or had earned a berth to play on May 13, 2006 at Quakes Stadium in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. for the first of three Worth Mayhem Bat Tournaments which A&V will sponsor.
Tournament director and A&V owner Al Acosta who had last minute adjustments to the tournament field said, "The tournament had 20 teams entered but due to roster problems, I was forced to drop two teams, resulting in 18 teams playing for the Mayhem bats. I wanted to make it fair for all the teams." Acosta would add, "This tournament had some of our best ‘Lower Rec’ teams play as well as a few ‘Lower E’ teams who have had trouble winning lately. So with the mixture of all divisions, it seemed to really work out. This is something A&V has really tried to control, making it fair for any team to win and not worry about teams coming in stacked. Being that A&V and Worth are giving out $2900 worth of Mayhem bats, we want to make it fair for all teams."
Roving Dogs/Miken from Glendale, CA came away champions for this first A&V/Worth Mayhem Bat Tournament and won the top prize of twelve Worth Mayhem bats. The Roving Dogs went undefeated 5-0 to win their first ever A&V tournament. The Roving Dogs have finished high in several previous events with many second, third and fourth place finishes but on this day they really put it all together. They started the day with a good performance against JL Builders from Banning, CA winning 17-4. Their second game was against A&V’s #1 ranked ‘Lower E’ division squad Team No Respect from Colton, CA.
Again, the Roving Dogs played good softball and won 8-3. Their third game put them up against a very good and solid WTC team from Highland, CA. This game had some really good defense, as well as some timely hitting by both teams, the way these two teams were playing you hated to see a loser and as it turned out Roving Dogs got the win with one timely hit to win 7-6. Now, with a 3-0 record and facing L.A. Pitbulls, also 3-0, in the undefeated game the Roving Dogs once again played some great defense and held on to win 7-3 to advance to the championship game.
The ‘Dogs would play the winner of the Pitbulls and WTC matchup for the title. The L.A. Pitbulls pounded out a 14-2 decision over WTC setting up the rematch with the Roving Dogs to try for a measure of revenge.
There would be no revenge on this day as the ‘Dogs finished the day the way they started with a convincing offensive and defensive display winning 14-2 to take home the tournament hardware.
Grag Perez was named Tournament MVP for the Roving Dogs and Bobby Peloquin, Eddie Lovato and Davie Cassandra were name to the all tournament team. L.A. Pitbulls from Northeast L.A. took 2nd place with a 4-2 record and named Edwin Quesada, George Perez and Gio Salazar to the all tournament team. WTC from Highland ended up in the 3rd place spot with a record of 4-2 and were represented on the all tournament by Chris Murillo, Paul Bone and "D" Rob.
JL Builders from Banning took 4th place with a record of 3-2 and named Jaime Lopez and Mike Dapra to the all tournament team.
A&V’s next tournament will be the ‘Men’s E’ on July 1st at Quakes Stadium in Rancho Cucamonga. A&V along with Worth will give out $3500 worth of Mayhem bats for that event. The third and final A&V/Worth Mayhem Bat tournament will be for the ‘Lower Rec’ teams on July 22nd at Quakes Stadium and again A&V/Worth will give out $3500 worth of Mayhem Bats.
Al Acosta finished his remarks by saying, "I would like to take this opportunity to express gratitude to Worth for their sponsorship and support."
