SPARKS, NV – The girl’s softball team at Reed High School in Sparks, NV is “cruising along,” according to coach, Ray Charles. And the team looks optimistic about heading for the top. Reed dominated their Reed Spring Tournament at Shadow Mountain Sports Complex on March 16. With ten teams from NV, CA and OR, Reed won the championships with a final game score of 5-2 against Crater Lake, OR.
The Spring Tournament was slightly smaller than previous years because of a conflict with the Easter Holiday. Charles said the competition wasn’t as great as past years (probably because Reed is too good), but he liked the fact of getting a few more games in under their belt and not having to drive out of town to do it. Next year though, the Reed Spring Tournament hopes to host 16 teams providing stiff competition.
Currently Reed’s softball team is sitting at 17-3 overall, with a 5-1 league record. But the coach thinks there will be some tough play up ahead. As with most any team, Charles said they just want to be the best they can be, and go on from there. “If we get beat by someone it doesn’t effect us.”
Of course, losing has some effect, because the coach and his team will have slimmer chances of making it to state. “We were in a bit of a drought, but our mission every year is to make it to state; that’s what we strive for.”
Right now though, Coach Charles said, “We’re pretty happy where we’re at.” In his ninth consecutive year coaching at Reed, Charles said there’s always room for improvement. He said his team needs to, “Be more consistent. That’s the key with any season.”
