HENDERSON, NV – A grand opening was held on May 16th to celebrate the opening of the 19-acre Madeira Canyon Park. The park is located at Canyon Retreat and Democracy Drive in Henderson, Nevada. The event was sponsored by Pulte Homes in cooperation with the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department.

The $10.6 million turnkey park project was built by developer Pulte Homes to the specifications of the City of Henderson. Upon completion the park has officially been turned over to the city for programming, maintenance and use by the public.

“It’s now really one of our finer parks,” said Kim Becker, the communications and marketing supervisor for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. “It’s a tremendous asset -- not just for the people out here but throughout Henderson.”

The park includes ball fields, multi-use fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, barbecue grills, a shaded playground, an enclosed toddler play area, horseshoe pits, a splash pad, restrooms and a number of shaded picnic shelters. There are also two parking lots and there is on-street parking almost all the way around the park.

“We’re trying to meet the needs of all the community here, not only our kids but also some of our more active adults with the tennis and horseshoe and basketball,” said Dominick Casey, the assistant director of the parks department.

The city says it will work with neighbors in the next couple of weeks to make sure there aren’t any problems with the lights on the fields.

“We’re using the highest technology of sports field lighting that’s available,” Casey said. “It essentially eliminates spill.”
The lights can also be turned off remotely when no one is using the fields, he said, noting that most of the fields will not begin to be used until late summer or early fall to allow the grass to finish growing.

Casey said athletic fields are in short supply in Henderson. “We are over capacity right now; these fields are hugely needed. One drive around our system at 6 o’clock at night will show you that you can’t find a piece of turf anywhere.”
Casey also said the athletic fields would be unlocked and open for use by residents, except when they are reserved by athletic teams or undergoing maintenance.
