LAS VEGAS, NV – The state of Nevada ASA program has lost one of its long-time officials. James “Jim” Lykins was born Aug. 3, 1943, in Kentucky or Ohio, depending on which story you heard. He passed away July 25, 2010 from complications from lung surgery at age 66.
Jim was a decorated Vietnam War veteran and began playing softball while in the Air Force. He retired from Local 501 Circus Circus after 20 years.
He was umpire-in-chief for 30 years for ASA in the state of Nevada and received his 40-year pin from ASA in 2005. He was an alternate umpire at the 2000 Olympics. For the past two years he served as rules interpreter for the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA).
“Jimmy was always one of the friendly faces I looked for at the ASA National Meetings or anytime I was on the field in Las Vegas,” said Softball West Magazine Publisher Tom Smedes. “Jimmy was instrumental in organizing umpires and umpire training throughout the state for many years. He will be missed.”
Jim is survived by his wife, Bea, sons, Tom, Tim and Jim, daughter, Mary Lane, stepson, Chris, grandchildren, a great-grandchild and extended family, including his beloved softball family.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Nevada State Bank, c/o Jim Lykins Memorial Fund, Account No. 0588011247.
